unwrapped boat

$2,000 - h: 57" x w: 20" x d: 7" - original

The "Unwrapped Boat " represents a passage back to a wall hung work, a series where I have taken on the challenge of mounting a sculpture on a flat panel, a mixing of sculpture and painting. One of the advantages of this mixing is that it gives the boat a staging, and isolation within its own context.

I wanted to try using strips of canvas coated with gesso as a joining material, like a contour going from flat to up and over the forms. Remember what fun it was as a child to play "doctor" and bandage things? I also like the way Picasso and Giacometti used cloth strips and plaster on wood armatures to build up sculptures.

"Unwrapped Boat" recalls early Cubist collages and I added the rectangular piece of wood with the burned edges as another level of the play between the painted image and real object. This is the freedom you have when working with assemblage, freedom to give and take. So that's why it is an "Unwrapped Boat". I have left it with its spontaneous, unfinished look so you can see how the process of making it unfolded.

This work has been shown at culture clash gallery in Salida, Colorado and also in my studio where it is a reminder to end a work while the spontaneous energy is still alive and not stymied by overworking.
