This is the first of my Ecuador series. During a recent trip to Ecuador, I sketched the lines formed by the Andes and volcanoes constantly, surrounded by clouds, the ever present niebla (fog) giving the landscape a misty feel. The sun would shine brilliantly for brief periods revealing the very blue sky due to the very high altitude. As I reflected on this strange landscape and the mysteries of Andean lost gold, I sensed layers and peeling off of parts of the whole. Deforestation has led to land slides and a sense of lost vegetation which I added in layers like pages. This mystery made me think of Poe's poem, El Dorado, which was once thought to be in Ecuador. "Over the Mountains of the Moon, Down the Valley of the Shadow..." The painting has acrylic media layers (gold and warm reds represent the lost), texture, and shadows defined by powdered graphite. I intended to leave a rather loose representation portraying the sense of deep mystery.
