Pieta from the Latin pietas-piety, pity: a representation in painting or sculpture of the Virgin Mary mourning over the dead body of Christ, often held on her knees. My Pieta in the original is of linden wood with aniline dye and natural mesquite. The mold for the bronze was taken from this a very difficult and unusual process.

This form of representation began to appear around 1300. In the Medieval period, the pieta acquired great importance as a pictorial composition that touched on a complex, core expression of the Christian doctrine and principles of piety. In the generalization of this theme in the 20th century, art in the worship of the pieta in the Roman Catholic Church, even beyond confessional limits, is rooted in the context of motherhood, war, and death. Michelangelo and Ernst Barlach represent the two areas. That last of Michelangelos pieces strained at the concept of the mystical marriage of Mary and Christ one of which he destroyed.

My Pieta is a condensation of this metamorphosis of 33 years or eons into this three dimensional representation. Mary, the Annunciation, the passage through her body, the separation and death of a relationship with orphan placed on the wooden earth of suffering to die again as a human. The child looks longingly at the mother for what had been and the mother at him knowing and sharing the suffering. Christ died for us so that we could have peace. Who suffered more Christ or Mary?
