Most photos of Machu Picchu show just the ancient Inka ruins, however I like this panoramic image because it shows the ruins in the context of Peru's Sacred Valley where they have sat for centuries. The Valle Segrado is the heartland of the Inka Empire. They considered it magical because of its abundant ability to sustain life. From this vantage point, you can see the ruins on the left and the stunning Andes Mountain peaks that tower above and form the Sacred Valley. I took this image on the fourth day of a trek through the Sacred Valley to reach Machu Picchu. For me this image is also sacred because I took it on the morning after I asked my lovely bride to marry me.
