Nestled in the Pacific coast hills of San Francisco sits Muir Woods, a national park protecting more than 500 acres of forest populated by Coast Redwood (Sequoia sempervirens). These giant trees have lived for centuries, even millennia, and this park is home to some of the last remaining strands of this tree variety. I was most struck by their size. It’s one thing to read about them in books; it’s a whole different thing to experience them in person. They are inconceivably large with trunks that seemed to soar forever into the sky. I tried to find the upper limits of their height by hiking up the steep hills nearby. However when I ran out of steps to climb, I only found this cloud forest and younger saplings starting their stretch to the stars. It was apparent that I would never be able to get above the canopy of these magnificent giants.
